STEM Festival 2023

On March 9, Earlham Schools collaborated with the Southwest and South Central STEM Hubs to host a regional STEM event for area families and K-8 students.

Local business professionals from 35 different companies prepared hands-on activities that highlighted how STEM is used in their respective career fields.  Students were able to learn more about agriculture, computer science, medical, human services, construction, and business fields.
Despite the winter-like weather, over 322 people attended the event, including 182 students. This is the fourth year for this annual event at Earlham, but the first year that area schools were expressly invited to attend.

"We want students to have exposure to a variety of careers, which is where the skills of the classroom are put into action, throughout their education," explained the event organizer, Kristin Sheffield, ECSD Director of Teaching & Learning. "STEM careers are in demand and we want students to see how they can use the soft skills we focus on (collaboration, creativity, communication, and critical thinking) out in the 'real world'. When we focus on the 4 Cs, students become more flexible and adaptive problem-solvers, which is useful in any career, but especially STEM fields."

We appreciate all the professionals who volunteered their time and talents, which made this learning experience possible for our students!
